Technology has inspired a growing crop of new words and phrases

The world of smartphones is filled with obscure acronyms and technical jargon. Below are just a few of the terms you may encounter.

- Android: A smartphone operating system and software platform created by Google. There are a number of competing mobile operating systems including BlackBerry and Apple’s iOS.

- Apps: Short for applications or, more accurately, applications software. Apps are computer software designed to help users perform a specific task. Apps can be used with cellphones.

- Browse: Software that allows the user to access Internet sites.

- Calling plan: The package of services offered by a wireless service provider. The plan usually includes monthly charges, voicemail and data, among other things.

- Dynamic memory: Also known as shared memory, it’s a way of organizing different types of data in the phone’s memory.

- 4G: The fourth generation of cellular wireless, which succeeds 3G and 2G.

- Graphics processing unit: The GPU is a specialized circuit that helps to manage computer graphics. Modern smartphones typically come with this.- - - HTML: Short for hypertext markup language, which is used to create web pages. Designed for desktop computers. A newer format, XHTML, is designed for mobile devices.

- Moore’s Law: We’re including this — a canny engineering observation, not a law of nature — to provide a little insight. In 1965, Gordon Moore, co-founder of Intel, which makes computer chips, famously predicted that “The number of transistors incorporated in a chip will approximately double every 24 months.” His prediction has largely been accurate. The nearly half century of advances has allowed computing devices to become cheaper and smaller and to perform an ever-growing number of tasks.

- MMS: Short for multimedia messaging services. It allows text, photos, audio and video, or a combination of the four. Most current mobile phones have this.

- Operating system: This manages the hardware and software of a smartphone.

- Roaming: Using a mobile phone outside of your service provider’s coverage area. Typically, service providers charge higher fees for calls, messages and access to the Internet.

- Smartphone: A cellphone that can do some of the same things as a personal computer, including providing Internet access and editing Microsoft Office documents.

- Text messaging: More commonly known as texting, this allows short messages to be sent and received on a mobile phone.

- Video calling: Also known as videoconferencing, this allows people to see live video of each other when talking.

Apple Now the World’s Third Largest Cellphone Maker

Apple has moved past LG in the worldwide rankings of mobile-phone unit sales. According to IDC, Apple is now the world’s third largest mobile-phone manufacturer, behind Nokia and Samsung.

Apple jumped two spots over the course of 2011. This time last year, Apple held fifth place among the world’s top phone manufacturers.

However, there still remains a huge gap between Apple and the twin forces of Samsung and Nokia, which dominate the mobile-phone market thanks to the popularity of their inexpensive feature phones. For Q4 2011, Nokia owned 26.6 percent of the worldwide mobile-phone market, Samsung held 22.8 percent and Apple had 8.7 percent. For the year overall, the stats were slightly different: Nokia had 27 percent of the market, Samsung had 21.3 percent and Apple had 6 percent, just beating out the 5.7 percent of LG Electronics.

“The strength of the iPhone 4S in Q4 alone clearly propelled Apple to the third position overall,” IDC analyst Kevin Restivo said. Apple had blockbuster sales last quarter, selling more than 37.04 million iPhones over the holiday season. Most of that was due to demand for the iPhone 4S, and, in the U.S., reduced prices for the year-old iPhone 4 and 2-year-old 3GS helped boost sales as well.

Widespread availability was key, too.

“I think Apple’s success is due to the presence of the iPhone in an enormous number of markets,” Canalysis principal analyst Pete Cunningham told Wired. Indeed, the iPhone 4S enjoyed the fastest iPhone rollout in Apple’s history. It’s now available in more than 90 countries, including China. In the company’s most recent earnings call, Apple CEO Tim Cook said that iPhone 4S demand in China “has been staggering,” despite the phone only having just launched there.

Simple feature phones still make up the majority of mobile phone sales, but smartphones are a rapidly growing market. And phone manufacturers can’t hedge their bets on dumb phones the way they could in the past. Just look at LG.

“LG really missed the entire touchscreen smartphone game,” Restivo said. “Only years after Apple made its mark, LG tried to transition more successfully into the smartphone place, and it’s still recovering.”

Unless its Lumia smartphones pick up momentum, Nokia could follow a path similar to LG’s, as Nokia was also late to the smartphone game. But Samsung has a solid footing in both arenas, with solid feature phone sales and record-breaking smartphone sales.

Restivo says that Apple will need to better penetrate emerging markets like those in Russia, Brazil and the middle east if it wants to sustain and improve its growth in the mobile phone space. But innovation is still the prime factor in driving Apple’s success, Restivo says.

“Apple has to continue to capture people’s interest,” Restivo said. “It’s not just about adding a better camera or processor.”

Indeed, chasing pure sales volume isn’t in Apple’s best interests, and it’s not the secret to its runaway success in the mobile space. “I’d probably argue it’s not important for Apple to be the number one vendor in the market,” Cunningham said. “The important aspect is Apple’s share of the value of the market as opposed to the volume.”

Still, as anyone with the hint of a competitive streak knows: It doesn’t hurt to be number one in every ranking, too.

Smartphone Owners Prone to Using in the Bathroom

Smartphone owners just can't stop using their phones, even when they are answering nature's call, according to survey that tracked cellphone usage in the bathroom.

Marketing firm 11Mark surveyed 1,000 Americans and found that three-fourths of the participants admitted to using their smartphones in the bathroom. One-quarter of the respondents said they never go into the bathroom without their phone.

Men and women were about equal in their bathroom usage of smartphones, with 74 percent of males and 76 percent of women acknowledging they use their phones there.

However, men appear to be more attached to their mobile devices, with 30 percent saying they never go to the bathroom without their phone, compared to 20 percent for women. A small number of men (20 percent) and women (13 percent) even admitted to conducting work calls from the stalls.

Reading texts (67 percent) and answering calls (63 percent) are the most common smartphone tasks performed in the bathroom, according to the survey, although more than half of the respondents (59 percent) sent a text while on the toilet and more than a third either read e-mail (42 percent) or confessed to initiating calls (41 percent) from the bathroom.

Droid (87 percent) and BlackBerry (84 percent) owners use their phones in the bathroom more than iPhone (77 percent) users, but BlackBerry users (75 percent) are more likely to answer a call than Droid (67 percent) or iPhone (60 percent) users.

Not surprisingly, Generation Y were the kings of smartphone bathroom usage, with 91 percent admitting to the practice, followed by Generation X (87 percent), baby boomers (65 percent) and those born before 1946 (47 percent).

Although not as popular as talking and texting, apps are being used from the bathroom, too. Gen Y (59 percent) topped that category, trailed by Gen X (43 percent), boomers (22 percent) and those born before 1946 (8 percent).

The survey also predicted that buying from the bathroom is poised for growth, with 16 percent of Gen Y smartphone users professing to have made a purchase from the boathroom, 10 percent of Gen Xers, 6 percent of boomers and 2 percent of those born before 1946.

Smartphones Making More Danger to Drivers

There's good news and bad news in the debate around the role of electronics and distracted driving.

The good news is that if you've talked on the phone while driving (as most of us have), you weren't raising your risk of a crash, say experts. The bad news is that you tripled your crash risk when you flipped open a handheld phone and dialed it while driving. And if you texted, the risks nearly jumped off the scale.

"If you're looking for your phone, reaching for it, answering it, or dialing it -- that's when the risk increases," said Charlie Klauer, a research scientist for Virginia Tech's Transportation Institute (VTTI), in a Design News interview.

Klauer and others who have equipped cars with cameras and collected millions of miles of data on crashes and near-crashes say that the key to distraction is visual, not cognitive. In other words, talking and thinking aren't issues, but taking your eyes off the road is.

And that's where the real problem lies. The phones that are now making their way into the vehicle are visual, which is bad enough, but they're also manual. They call on users to look, read, and even type. And while the amount of cellphone gabbing in cars is said to be dropping, the amount of smartphone use is skyrocketing.

"We can have a debate about whether talking is dangerous, but we really need to focus on what we are using phones for today," Daniel V. McGehee, director of human factors and vehicle safety research at the University of Iowa's Public Policy Center, told us. "With smartphones, we are now getting into visual-manual issues. We're not only looking at the phone; we're manipulating it."

VTTI's study of cellphone use showed that there was virtually no statistical difference between those who talked on the phone and those who didn't. But for drivers who dialed, the risk of a crash tripled. And in a study of truck drivers who texted, the risks jumped by a factor of 23.

"Texting is in a league all it's own," Klauer says.

HTC Ville thinnest phone rumored to land at T-Mobile

If you were feeling let down by T-Mobile’s weak showing at CES this year, it’s time to turn that frown upside down. According to Evan Blass of PocketNow, T-Mobile will begin carrying HTC’s thinnest phone ever created, the HTC Ville, this spring.

Expected to be unveiled at Mobile World Congress, rumored specs on the HTC Ville have been around since early November, 2011. Along with Android 4.0 and Sense UI 4, the Ville is expected to launch with:

As exciting as the Snapdragon S4, Android 4.0 and Super AMOLED display are, the Ville’s crowning achievement is its sleek metal construction and staggering thinness. At just under 8mm, the Ville will be thinner than both the iPhone 4S and Samsung Galaxy S II.

Along with information on the Ville, Blass also detailed a new service coming to HTC known as HTC Family. HTC Family will be integrated in the latest version of Sense, and features new ways for families to communicate, along with geolocation tools for staying connected. HTC Family is also rumored to be announced at MWC. Look for the T-Mobile branded Ville to on display at CTIA.

Sony Xperia Ion : 4G and Extremely Thin Smartphone

Sony enters the LTE cellphone game here at the Consumer Electronics Show with its latest offering, the Xperia Ion smartphone. Along with 4G LTE speed from AT&T, the phone features an HDMI output, 4.6-inch display (compared to a 3.5-inch display on the iPhone 4S), a 12 megapixel camera and an extremely thin body.

Beyond the traditional smartphone specs there are a lot of features that make it uniquely Sony. It runs a mobile version of Sony’s Bravia engine, the same technology that goes into Sony Bravia HDTVs, making especially vivid colors on the screen. And since it’s a Sony you can download PlayStation and PlayStation portable games to the phone. It’s also got a compatible dock to view on a larger display.

No price has been set, but expect to see it on store shelves in the second quarter of 2012.

Galaxy drives Samsung to record fourth quarter

Samsung sealed the triumph of its delayed but convincing smartphone push in 2011, reporting a record fourth quarter profit in which surging sales of the Galaxy range were a key factor.

The other main contributor to the strong figures (only preliminary at this stage) was the sale of the hard drive business to Seagate and these two factors resulted in operating profit of KRW5.2 trillion ($4.5bn), up from KRW3.02 trillion in the December quarter in 2010 and well ahead of analyst estimates. Sales were up 12% to KRW47 trillion.

Cellphone sales set a new record of 300m units in the year and the mobile device push will be further intensified in 2012 to offset falling profits in chips and flat screens, with Samsung trading on its ability to create broad portfolios, with models tweaked for different carriers, countries and consumer profiles. As well as Galaxy, it offers the Wave range, running its own bada operating system, plus WP7 and featurephone devices, and also controls the Linux-based Tizen platform with Intel

"The mobile business is generating a huge chunk of profit now," James Song of Daewoo Securities told Bloomberg. "It may be getting harder for Apple to catch up because they only have a limited number of models."

Operating profit may be KRW200bn higher or lower than today's preliminary estimate when audited results are announced later this month, Samsung said. The company did not provide net income figures or a divisional breakdown yet. Analysts estimate that operating profit at the telecoms division, which includes handsets and the smaller wireless infrastructure business, will be up 81% year-on-year to KRW2.6 trillion on a 36% rise in sales to about KRW16.45 trillion. Samsung added that full year sales were up 6.5% on 2010, to a record KRW164.7 trillion, but operating profit fell by 6.7% to KRW16.2 trillion.

Samsung overtook Apple in the third quarter to become the world's largest smartphone seller after shipping 27.8m units, three times more units than a year earlier, a feat which doubled the Korean giant's market share. Dongbu Securities estimates that the firm sold 32m smartphones in the fourth quarter, mainly because of the success of the Galaxy S II, which shipped in May and broke the 10m-unit barrier more quickly than any previous Samsung product. Total handset sales for 2011 are expected to reach about 300m.

On the dark side, profit at the semiconductor division is expected to have fallen by 11% to KRW1.6 trillion on sales of KRW9.65 trillion because of slumping prices of DRAMs and the slowdown in the PC memory space, though Samsung suffered less than rivals because it is stronger in mobile memory. Its shipments of smartphone DRAMs are thought to have doubled in the quarter, according to iSuppli. TVs and displays were also under intense pressure.

Kids and Cellphones: Age is not always the issue

When it comes to kids and cellphones, it's best not to get hung up on age because kids mature at different times.

With 75 percent of 12- to 17-year-olds carrying a cellphone, chances are your kid wants one too (if he or she doesn't already have one, that is). What's the best age for a child to go mobile?

According to a recent survey from the online opinion community SodaHead, most people said ages 13 and 15 are the most appropriate for a first cellphone — though teens should be at least 16 for a smartphone.

In reality, most kids are 12 or 13 when they get their first cellphone, according to a 2009 survey conducted by the Pew Research Center's Internet & American Life Project, and it seems to be trending younger.

Dr. Michael Rich, director of the Center on Media and Child Health at Children's Hospital Boston, said it's best not to get hung up on an age, because individual kids become ready for responsibility at different times.

Rather, the right time to outfit children with cellphones is when they need one, be it to coordinate pickup after a team practice, for safety in case of emergency, or just to socialize with friends. He advises against smartphones, which give access to too much.

Once the reasons for needing a cellphone are established — and "everyone else has one" is not a good reason — parents should discuss in concrete terms what the cellphone should be used for, what it is not to be used for, and what the consequences are for violating those expectations, Rich said.

A growing problem from cellphones: kids losing sleep or having low-quality sleep when their phone dings with a text at 3 a.m. So Rich recommends that parents set a cellphone curfew, at which time the child hands over the phone to charge overnight. It should be known that parents will be peeking to ensure there's nothing on the phone that shouldn't be.

Though fears of sexting and cyberbullying give some parents pause, "for most kids the danger is that it's a huge waste of time," Rich said. "It's time when they could be genuinely connecting with other people."

Microsoft Faces Make-Or-Break Year In Smartphones

After flailing for years, Microsoft's next best hopes are tied to several announcements. For one, later this year Microsoft will likely release two major upgrades to its Windows 7 mobile operating system. For another, later this week T-Mobile USA is expected to announce it's the exclusive seller of the first Windows 7 smartphone for the U.S. market made by fading cellphone leader Nokia (NOK).

"From a strategic viewpoint, Microsoft has to succeed (now)," said Avi Greengart, an analyst at research firm Current Analysis. "Microsoft is running out of room to attract people who have not yet gone to one of the other platforms."

Microsoft's comeback attempt began a year ago when it released Windows Phone 7, a completely new version of its Windows Mobile OS. An early player in smartphones and once a formidable rival, Microsoft has faded in the face of heavy competition from the Apple(AAPL) iPhone and phones based on the Google (GOOG) Android operating system.

Windows Phone 7 has received positive reviews. And Samsung, HTC and others make Windows 7 phones available in the U.S. from AT&T (T), Sprint Nextel (S) and Verizon Wireless.

But Microsoft remains a laggard.

No. 4 Microsoft's share of the U.S. smartphone OS market was just 5.2% for the three months ended Nov. 30, says market tracker ComScore. Android led at 47%, followed by Apple at 29%. BlackBerry maker Research In Motion (RIMM) was No. 3, at 16.6%. Worldwide, market tracker Gartner puts Microsoft's share at a mere 1.5% as of Sept. 30, light years behind leader Android, at 50%.

In February, Nokia announced it would use Windows Phone 7 as its flagship operating system on new smartphones. It represented a major commitment by Nokia in moving away from its own cellphone operating system, Symbian.

But whether Nokia can help rejuvenate Microsoft is doubtful. Nokia is still the world's largest cellphone maker, but its market share has plummeted to 24% from 40% three years ago. And while it's No. 2 worldwide in smartphones behind Android, it's fast losing ground to Android and Apple.

Lumia 710 Sales Next Week

T-Mobile's Nokia-Windows 7 phone, the Lumia 710, should be on sale next week and is expected to cost just $50 with a two-year service contract. That's far below the cost of the iPhone and most Android phones.

"Nokia has tied its future to Windows Phone, but Nokia has stumbled badly," said Jack Gold of research firm J. Gold Associates.

With 2011 coming to a close and CES 2012 just around the corner, opinion-based website SodaHead.com asked its community to vote on the top new gadgets of the year. Not surprisingly, Apple took the top two spots, as the iPhone 4S was the winner with 39% of the vote, followed by the iPad2 with 25%. Rounding out the top five were the Kindle Fire (17%), Nintendo 3DS (12%) and the Nook Table (7%). The full list can be seen below the video showcasing Nintendo’s hands-free 3D device.

iPhone 4S best new gadget of 2011?

According to the opinion-site SodaHead.com, the iPhone 4S is the best new gadget of 2011. This caught my attention, and then, admittedly, my disappointment when I saw only 962 people voted in total. But, it does invite some questions. Do you have an iPhone 4S, and do you think it is the best new gadget? I'm still leaning towards a smartphone and am thinking I might jump soon.... so please weigh in below. If you prefer another new gadget, please also sound off below!

Smartphone offer may be too good to last

Unlimited smartphone service for $19 a month? Really?

That’s the plan from Republic Wireless, a North Carolina company that’s trying to set a new standard in dirt-cheap communications. Consumers are taking the bait; there’s a long waiting list to sign up for the service at republicwireless.com.

I don’t see how they can survive at this price. Indeed, the company admits that it is testing the concept and may decide it is unsustainable. That would be a tragedy, because Republic is delivering a remarkable bargain when smartphone bills can easily run $80 a month or more.

Republic relies on a hybrid approach to cellular service, one that should be familiar to those who use Internet calling services like Google Voice or Skype on their smartphones. Whenever the phone is connected to a nearby Wi-Fi Internet router, these apps let you transmit voice calls over the Internet for free, without touching your monthly allotment of cellphone minutes.

Republic is working the same angle. Its parent company, Bandwidth.com Inc., already provides Internet-based phone calling to thousands of US businesses, and even carries lots of traffic for Skype and Google Voice. The company sells a decent but low-end Android smartphone for $199, full price, with no two-year contract. Customers activate the phone’s built-in Wi-Fi service, and connect to their home or office network. Now all calls move over the Internet.

But you’ll sometimes want to make calls when you’re on the road. That’s where the other half of Republic’s hybrid system kicks in. Republic pays Sprint Nextel Inc. to provide standard 3G cellular service to its customers when they can’t use Wi-Fi. Since Sprint’s network is nationwide, Republic users can always be reasonably confident that their calls will get through.

Originally, the Sprint calling plan offered by Republic wasn’t unlimited. Use it too often, and Republic Wireless would cut you off. But last week, the company announced a change of heart. It now vows truly unlimited service. You get all the calls, Web surfing, and e-mails you want, whether on Wi-Fi or Sprint. Republic still reserves the right to ban certain extreme practices, like leaving a phone connected 24 hours a day. But there will be no more limits on normal usage.

So how’s the service? Not magnificent, but not bad. Start with the phone. For now, Republic offers just one model, the LG Optimus. It’s smaller than the average Android phone, with a smooth rubberized case that feels pleasant in the hand.

Don’t count on using it for streamed video; the low-resolution screen is cramped and has a grainy, pixellated look. However, it’s good enough for reading e-mails and casual Internet surfing. Throw in a so-so 3.2-megapixel camera, GPS navigation, and of course Wi-Fi access, and you’ve got a decent entry-level smartphone for $199. Still, it’s a significant investment, so Republic promises to refund the cost of the phone if it abandons its unlimited service plan.

Calling quality was a bit of a disappointment. I often use Google Voice on my Android phone to save on cellular minutes, and I’ve been quite happy with the results. The calls sound just as good as they do over the standard AT&T Inc. cellular network. I figured Republic Wireless would deliver similar quality; I figured wrong. Wi-Fi calls went through quickly, but voices had a tinny sound with a hint of echo. It’s not a fatal flaw; I could clearly hear the other party, and they told me that I sounded fine.

A Republic Wireless spokesman told me the company is aware of the issue and is tweaking its software for better performance.

They’d better hurry, or Republic customers may do all their calling via Sprint. When I connected over the nation’s number-three cellular carrier, the calls sounded fine.

A horde of companies offer no-contract wireless plans, but none as inexpensive as Republic. Rival no-contract companies like MetroPCS and Boost Mobile generally charge $50 to $60 a month.

Still, this new approach to cheap calling comes at a price. Republic’s customer service is lousy. Got a technical problem? Send them an e-mail, because there’s no phone number for tech support.

So if you want handholding, Republic Wireless is not for you. But the call quality is decent, and the price is exceptional. At $19 a month, I don’t see how these guys can make it. I hope they prove me wrong.

Best of the Year : Apple, HTC, Motorola or Samsung?

There’s no doubt 2011 marked a huge year for smartphone sales as these phones etched closer to overtaking average cellphone sales throughout the U.S. Of the biggest achievements this year, we saw the highly-anticipated release of Android 4.0, Motorola’s debut of its first Android-based RAZR and the long-rumored iPhone 4S – finally!

Apple, HTC, Motorola, and Samsung all earned bragging rights for contributions to the smartphone market. Each made notable and/or distinct products, but this tech writer wants to know from readers, which smartphone was the most significant in 2011.

iPhone 4S: Rumors about the successor to the iPhone 4 set the web ablaze, dominating tech and general news headlines. The rumors of a larger screen and 4G capabilities turned out to be nothing more than that. It was reported that many Apple enthusiasts initially felt let down by the iPhone 4S, but Siri, Apple’s voice-control software, turned into the talk of the town. Voice-control may not be anything new for smartphones, but Siri’s intelligence made it a standout feature on the iPhone 4S.

Motorola Droid RAZR: If you didn’t own or see a Motorola RAZR in the mid 2000’s, you were probably hiding under a rock – a very large rock. This super-slim phone was one of the most successful cellphones in history. Motorola resurrected the RAZR name in November hoping to reclaim some of the original RAZR glory, this time wrapped in Android 2.3. The latest RAZR is a formidable smartphone that won’t weigh you down at 127 grams, and most of the body comes in at a mere – and impressive – 7.1 mm thick.

Samsung Galaxy S II

Samsung Galaxy S II: This smartphone truly brought the trifecta of what premium smartphones should embody with a stunning design, high-end features and superior battery life. As such, this 4.5-inch smartphone didn’t get lost in a sea of Gingerbread smartphones.

Samsung Galaxy Nexus: Some people might sum up the Samsung Nexus Galaxy’s appeal in two words: Android 4.0. But The Samsung Nexus Galaxy has more appeal than its designated OS. The latest Nexus is a solid smartphone with its dual-core processor and 4G capabilities. Throw in a 4.65-inch display, an HD Super AMOLED screen, and a fortified glass display and you have a strong contender here in the Galaxy Nexus.

Honorable Mention: BlackBerry. RIM certainly had its share of woes in 2011 and a gray cloud still hovers over the smartphone giant. But RIM did get noticed with the release of the BlackBerry Bold 9930, Torch 9810 and Torch 9850 last Summer running OS 7. It wasn’t enough to completely turn RIM around, but it did illustrate that Blackberry is still competitive.

The smartphone and mobile computing marketing will continue to evolve, next year probably bringing exciting new ways to improve how we socialize and share information. However this year, I’d like to know which smartphone made the biggest impact in your view.

You've had your one too many and now you're itching to get away, either to head home or to the next party. These applications can help you figure out if you're sober enough to drive, calculating their results based on your height, weight and alcohol intake.

Obviously, these are not 100 percent accurate. If you have any doubts about driving after you have been drinking, you need to refrain. Also, saying, "My cellphone said I was sober," after you get pulled over by the police won't get you out of a ticket or accident.

Am I drunk yet? How drunk am I? If you're one of those intoxicated people who is always asking those questions, then these apps are for you. They'll calculate your blood-alcohol content by using your height and weight in addition to whether you ate and how many drinks you've had.

Both will show the gradual increase in blood alcohol over time and also list when you should be able to legally drive and when you will be officially sober.

Way too sloshed? The directions point you in the direction of the nearest hospital. Also lets you put out a distress signal to your Facebook friends and let them know you need help.

The days of carrying around both a phone and a camera are numbered. New research from NPD finds – surprise, surprise -- that smartphones are now the source of more than a quarter of the photos and videos people take in the U.S., and that number is only going to rise as the cameras built into smartphones keep improving. Here’s a look at the best for each carrier.

iPhone 4S for Verizon, Sprint and AT&T (starting at $199)

This phone’s 8-megapixel camera offers autofocus, flash and overall, better quality shots than the iPhone 4’s camera. There’s also face detection and options for cropping, rotating, color correction, and red-eye reduction. And, of course, it shoots full, 1080p video, too. Overall, the 4S captures very high quality images and is just lots of fun to use.

Samsung Epic 4G on Sprint ($0.01)

Lots of options like effects, white balance controls, ISO settings and even a built-in photo and video editor (that lets you string together clips with music, even) are fun for photographers who like lots of control. The camera takes nice, fast pictures, with very little lag between shots. Video can be slightly choppy if you’re panning the camera or shooting subject with a lot of motion, though the still images are crisp and bright.

HTC Rezound on Verizon ($149.99)

The selling point for this smartphone is the audio functionality, but the Rezound’s camera has a host of features such as automatic face detection, panorama mode, and burst shot. Outdoor shots produce vivid and bright color and great contrast, though low-light photos are dimmer than they could be (despite a built-in, dual-LED flash that lights up the darkest shooting environments). Shutter speed can vary a bit, with some lag, too. The camera can also record impressive, 1080p HD video.

Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket on AT&T ($179.99)

Like the others, the Galaxy S II has an 8-megapixel camera, which can shoot 1080p HD video. Included are tools like color effects, white-balance controls, ISO settings, and an image editor that lets you crop photos. The built-in video editor that lets you piece together clips right on the phone. The camera performs well in low-light thanks to the LED flash, and delivers rich color and clarity in outdoor shots.

HTC Amaze 4G for T-Mobile ($199)

The coolest camera feature on the Amaze is called SmartShot, which takes a series of pictures and combines elements of each to create that perfect picture. So for example, if one person's eyes are closed in one shot but open in another and another person is smiling in the first shot and only half-smiling in the next, the final image should show everyone beaming and bright eyed. Another feature, Perfect Pics, takes the most technically correct (exposure, composition, color) and automatically places them in a separate album.

FBI Warns of Posting Photos to The Web

The FBI is warning citizens with smartphones to be wary of posting photos from your mobile device. You may be sharing more than just a pretty picture.

With the ubiquitous presence of smartphones and social media platforms in all of our lives, sharing photos has never been easier. Millions of pictures are uploaded to the Web every day and camera-enabled mobile phones are the perennial top-selling consumer electronic devices. So it’s a safe bet that even more photos will be cropping up on image-hosting communities and personal websites.

But what exactly is being shared?

According to a release issued by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), in some cases, you might unwittingly be letting others know where you live and work and your travel patterns and habits. These details can be revealed through bits of information embedded in images taken with smartphones and some digital cameras and then shared on public websites. The information, called metadata, often includes the times, dates and geographical coordinates (latitude and longitude) where images are taken.

While the geospatial data can be helpful in myriad web applications that plot image locations, it also opens a door for criminals, including burglars, stalkers, and predators. It’s not a stretch to imagine young teens’ images of their ventures to the mall or beach being culled by web predators and meticulously plotted on online maps.

“It’s not something we think is happening. We know it’s happening,” said Kevin Gutfleish, head of the Innocent Images Intelligence Unit in the FBI’s Cyber Division. The unit provides analysis and assessments of emerging threats for the operational arm of the Innocent Images National Initiative, which targets child pornography and sexual predators.

“The way that images are being posted in real time allows others who have access to see the metadata and see where the photos were taken and reveal their location at that time,” Gutfleish said.

An intelligence analyst in the FBI Criminal Division’s Crimes Against Children Unit said these details can reveal a “pattern of life,” particularly when images posted over time are clustered in geographic locations.

“It doesn’t have to be in real time to be dangerous,” said the analyst. “Historical data can tell you a lot about individuals’ day-to-day habits and may indicate where they are most likely to be at a certain time.”

Some popular social media sites automatically scrub metadata from images before they are published. On the other hand, some leverage the data to display location information beside the images. An amateur sleuth could easily pinpoint a location using the available latitude and longitude coordinates.

“Even if they don’t intentionally say where they are, the photos could reveal that,” Gutfleish said. “And that could present a potential danger.”

Gutfleish said he has seen an increase in intelligence reports and complaints about the potential misuse of the metadata embedded in photos. He said the proliferation of online tools that aggregate personal information from social networking and image hosting sites is enough to urge a level of caution.

He suggests mobile phone users at the very least check the “options” or “settings” on their phones (and any applicable mobile applications) to see if they are sharing location information. In many cases, the default setting is to share location information.

“It’s just a best-practice if you don’t want to give out your location,” Gutfleish says. “We simply want to make sure people know this is happening.”

Disabling the Location Function

Disabling the photo geotagging function on mobile phones varies by manufacturer, but is generally a straightforward process. On the most current iPhone model, users can simply find the "Location Services" toggle in there "Settings folder."

The path to location-based services options varies from phone to phone. Users should take special care when enabling or disabling location services (which may include navigation functions), or disabling applications (like photos) accessing the GPS data. Consult your phone manufacturer’s guidelines for more information.

Smartphone Cameras Make Gains on Point-And-Shoots

The next time you snap a picture of your family, friends, or that huge rat you saw crawling along the subway tracks, you might just reach for your cellphone rather than your trusty point-and-shoot camera. According to consumer research company NPD Group, the number of photos taken with smartphones has been steadily increasing over the years, while the number of photos taken on cameras has decreased.

In its latest Imaging Confluence Study, NPD states that the number of pictures consumers shot using smartphones increased from 17 percent in 2010 to 27 percent in 2011, while the number of photos shot using cameras fell from 52 percent to 44 percent. NPD points to smartphones’ ease of use, compact size, and relatively long battery life as the reasons consumers have started turning away from classic point-and-shoot cameras in favor of their phone’s camera.

Overall, the report indicates, the camera market saw a 13 percent drop in the first 10 months of 2011. That being said, consumers are still spending on detachable lens cameras, such as SLRs, which saw a 15 percent increase in units moved, and point-and-shoot models with an optical zoom of 10x or more, which grew by 11 percent.

The reason for the increase in the higher-end camera segment is simple, said executive director and senior imaging analyst with NPD, Liz Cutting. “Cameras haven’t lost their core place in the eyes or hands of mom as the core memory keeper, nor the imaging enthusiast. Consumers who use their mobile phones to take pictures were more likely to do so instead of their camera when capturing spontaneous moments, but for import events, cameras are still the device of choice.”

So while your phone may be loaded with pictures of the ridiculous and asinine things you see while out and about, you’ll more than likely still capture those truly important moments with a “real” camera.

New technology adds to road risks

Can you safely talk on a cellphone — or for that matter, check your email or scroll through Google Maps — while driving?

Well, of course you can. But those other folks with their hands off the wheel and their eyes off the road are a public menace.

Unfortunately, that sums up the attitude of many American motorists, who widely acknowledge using their phones while behind the wheel but insist they’re safe drivers.

Meanwhile, the number of people worried about the other guy is soaring. When the state Office of Traffic Safety asked California drivers to name the biggest safety problem on the road, nearly 40 percent listed drivers who use cellphones. That’s a big jump from last year, when the top worry was aggressive drivers and speeders, and only 18.3 percent were concerned about cellphones.

So what changed? Probably the explosion of smartphones, which aren’t so much phones as portable computers — and which, like a computer, require both eyes and often both hands, meaning that, in our view, drivers should never operate them. But they do. More than one in four Americans who download applications to their smartphones admit to using those apps while driving, according to a survey by Nationwide Mutual Insurance.

And the number of people with smartphones is growing fast. U.S. sales of smartphones are expected to hit 95 million in 2011, and 43 percent of mobile phone owners have smartphones; soon it will be a majority.

Motorists have good reason to worry about this. Studies show that people talking on their cellphones are four times more likely to be in an accident than other drivers, and their level of impairment is comparable to people with a blood alcohol level of 0.08 percent, the legal limit. And that research was done back when cellphones were used only for making calls. Now that they’re used for posting on Facebook or playing Angry Birds, we suspect the dangers are much greater.

Thirty states ban cellphone use by novice drivers, but none do so for all drivers. North Carolina law bans texting by all drivers. The law was put in place in 2009.

But still, we see enough distracted drivers hunched over a miniature keyboard to know the law isn’t scaring anyone. We think the possibility of a traffic accident should be enough.

While a total cellphone ban for all drivers would avoid the problem of legislating for yesterday’s technology, there’s no certainty it will radically reduce the number of accidents. It’s still ultimately up to individuals to make the final decision.

If you value your life and the lives of others, put away your smartphone until you have parked the car.

Smartphone Users Talk Less

New figures show that even though we’re spending more on cellphones, we’re spending less time talking on them. The pattern appears to be the result of more convenient ways of communicating, notably text messages.
Research firm Nielsen has just published its latest survey of US mobile users along with a comparison to the same period in 2009. It found that women talked on their cellphone for an average 771 minutes in the 30 days before being questioned (25 minutes a day); the 2009 survey gave a figure or 861 minutes. For men the figure this time was 605 (20 minutes a day), down from 679.

The explanation seems to be the rise of text messaging, with women sending an average of 802 messages (a whopping 27 a day), up from 593. Men are now on 604 (20 a day), up from 420. Both those daily figures sound ridiculously high to me, so this may be a case of looking at the trend rather than trusting the details.
The big change is the reach of smartphones: whereas 18 percent of respondents had one in 2009, the figure is now 44 percent. Among those aged 18 to 34, the majority now own a smartphone.

The survey also asked about operating system, finding Android on 44.2 percent of smartphones (about a third of which were HTC handsets), Apple on 28.6 percent, BlackBerry on 17 percent and Windows on around 6.6 percent. These are only for post-paid (ie contract) phones, so it’s possible Apple and BlackBerry figures may be a little higher than the overall picture. Remember also these are figures for phones in use, not phones being sold, where the picture is even bleaker for Microsoft.

Perhaps the most notable set of figures is the one that doesn’t show anything. The survey also broke down the use of operating system by age only to find there’s hardly any variation. iPhones are more popular among the over 65s than any other age group, while BlackBerry’s have a spike among those aged 45-54 but, while you could come up with explanations (iPhones are easy to use, managers and execs like BlackBerry handsets), the variation isn’t wide enough to be statistically conclusive.

HTC Sensation XL : Big on Music

It doesn't seem too long ago when we were pushing the boundaries on getting to the smallest size in phones and with the advent of smartphones, that trend seems to have reversed. The sizes of phones keep increasing and the definition of "pocketable" is left rather loose.

The HTC Sensation XL plays its part by featuring a screen size of 4.7 inches. The front features a thin, glossy, white bezel with the standard Android keys — Back, Menu, Search and Home — on the bottom chin. The back is aluminium with a white, Beats-branded chin. In line with HTC's construction style, the Sensation XL feels sturdy.

The 4.7-inch screen is deceiving in terms of phone bulk. The device is 9.9mm thick and weighs 162g — far less than what you would expect a phone of this size to be. This seems to have become a norm in devices today and part of the reason why larger devices are more commonplace. The screen features a resolution of 480x800, which falls slightly short of the high-end 540x960 displays that are popular today. Despite that, there's ample room on the bright and vivid screen. It seems like everything is better on the bigger screen, especially typing, which brings a new level of comfort with the increased size.

The custom HTC Sense UI looks fantastic on the larger screen as well. The home screen is very functional in that it allows you to unlock a phone into an app directly — phone, camera, messages and more. However, I prefer the unmodified appearance of Android. That's not to say the HTC Sense is bad. It is actually one of the better ones out there.

The Sensation XL is a Beats-accredited phone — which means, in addition to the branding at the back bottom, it comes with the Beats in-ear headphones and a custom app that processes the song to make it sound better with the headphones. There is a noticeable difference in the quality of music and it seems due justice has been done to the Beats name. The headphones, with their red wires and aluminium styling, stand out well and are very comfortable once you choose the buds that fit your ears.

Given the emphasis on the Sensation XL being a media phone — large screen and quality headphones — it's a surprise that these phones don't feature expandable memory with a microSD card. With a 16GB fixed memory (of which 13GB is useable) and rampant digital gluttony, most of us may not be able to feature our entire music/video collection on the phone. It seems to be an odd omission, really.

The camera on the HTC Sensation XL is powered by an 8-megapixel sensor. Photography enthusiasts will understand that the low aperture of f/2.2 helps the camera do well in low-light situations. The camera does well for one on a phone.

As is the case with large-screen phones today, battery life takes a hit. Powered by a 1600mAh battery, the XL does last just over a day with 3G enabled, moderate browsing and video, and a few snaps being shot. However, extended usage of the device may result in you running for the charger a bit too soon.

The HTC Sensation XL is a power-packed device with an unashamed focus on media. The large screen and Beats audio help deliver a stellar experience which may be matched by few other devices. This experience does not come at the cost of the core functionalities of the phone. Coming in well north of Dh2,500, the Sensation XL is definitely a high-end device which may be liked by a few, and loved by others.

Smartphone Could Replace Wallets

The days of hunting through your wallet for your credit card – or using a wallet and cards at all – could be numbered, thanks to technology that lets smartphones act like contactless cards.

Forty-four BNZ Wellington and Vodafone Auckland staff have begun testing the wireless communication technology – called Near Field Communication, or NFC – at cafes at their offices.

Instead of swiping their credit cards and entering their pins, they hold their phones above a special reader, similar to how Snapper cards are used. The cost of their coffee or muffin is then deducted from a Visa credit card chip in the phone's Sim card.

Users can receive a digital receipt on the phone, which keeps a record of their transactions.

BNZ channels innovation head Paul Tait said NFC was "not just about doing payments on your phone ... you won't carry a wallet, there will just be no need".

People could also use the technology in place of loyalty cards, to receive and redeem digital coupons, or store digital tickets for transport.

Phone manufacturers were beginning to produce mass-market, NFC-capable phones, which would drive uptake of the technology by consumers and businesses.

The technology would make credit-card fraud more difficult as the phones could not be skimmed for data, Mr Tait said.

The credit card could be disabled if people lost their phones and, for large purchases, they could require that a Pin was entered as well.

BNZ project manager Phillippa Shortland said the technology was speeding up queues at its cafe, as it was faster than swiping cards and entering Pins.

Unlike other trials of the technology in New Zealand, the NFC chip is embedded in the phone rather than in separate cards or attached to phones.

Google, in the United States, has launched a similar mobile payment system called Google Wallet, while Apple's iPhone 5, is expected to include NFC. The technology is one of many new methods for making payments.

ANZ New Zealand has launched an iPhone application that lets customers transfer money to anyone with a cellphone, without the need for a bank account number, while Air New Zealand's new Airpoints card also doubles as a pre-paid credit card on to which foreign currencies can be loaded.

New Brands : Facebook, Amazon, Lenovo, Google and Sony

Apple, Samsung, Nokia, HTC and Research In Motion will face several new rivals in the smartphone market next year.

For mobile phones, which comprise smartphones and feature phones, Nokia Oyj edged Samsung to be the top vendor, with 106.6 million units shipped, compared to Samsung's 87.8 million in the third quarter, according to IDC. In the high-end phones market, Samsung led the pack with 23.6 million units of the Galaxy S2 and other brands shipped, compared to Apple's 17.1 million units of the iPhones, and Nokia Oyj's 16.8 million units of the aging Symbian line, says IDC.

Smartphone purchases softened in the third quarter as consumers delayed purchases to wait for the fifth-generation iPhone, RIM's BlackBerry 7 phone series or Microsoft's upcoming Windows 7 or 8 phones. But analysts expect smartphone demand to increase in the years to come, as more people are expected to replace their talk-and-text only phones with more advanced devices.

Although the market is already crowded, new players are expected to join the bandwagon in 2012, hoping to gain ground against Apple and Samsung.

Lenovo

Samsung has unveiled the Galaxy Note, a device with a 5.3-inch-screen, which straddles the line between tablet and smartphone.

The Galaxy Note features the world's first and largest 5.3" HD Super AMOLED display, offering the largest screen estate among current high-end phones, but is more compact than the 9.7-inch iPad.

Mashable is reporting that Lenovo is joining the club, as revealed by a photo showing off a five-inch Android.

Lenovo could be a serious threat to the smartphone heavyweights as nobody knows China better than Lenovo. Lenovo is the world's second-largest seller and the number one PC vendor in China, which has almost 1 billion wireless subscribers.

Lenovo unveiled a smartphone in China last year, the LePhone. The LePhone was offered at half the cost of an iPhone but was not sold outside China.

Lenovo is quickly growing in the PC market. Will it take the magic to smartphones?

Amazon

Early this year, following poor launches of the Motorola Xoom and the BlackBerry PlayBook, analysts were saying that Apple didn't create a market for media tablets, it created demand for an iPad. But Amazon has shown that there's a market for non-iPads at the right price point. Following the success of the $199 Kindle Fire tablet, the online bookseller will try its luck at the smartphone market. Research analysts working for Citi believe Amazon will start selling a smartphone of its own late next year.

According to reports, CIti believes that Amazon is working together with Foxconn, the manufacturer of the iPhone and many other devices, to develop the Amazon smart phone. The phone is expected to use a Texas Instrument OMAP 4 processor, which will make the phone a "mid end device" by late next year.

Amazon's entry into the smartphone market is not unexpected given that it has its own Android App Store and it's offering a huge portfolio of digital content at the Amazon site, and $79 per month live streaming at Amazon Prime. Like the Kindle Fire, Amazon will probably sell the smartphone at a loss and recover those revenue from the sale of online content. And, as with the Kindle Fire, Amazon won't need superior specs to compete with the like of Samsung, but by using its digital content as a major draw.

But the smartphone market could be more complicated: While Apple's iPhone 4S costs a steep $649 contract-free, it is only available for $199 on two-year contracts with major networks. Amazon could probably build its own cellular network to deliver wireless service at lower rates. But it's easier said than done.

Facebook

Facebook is the number one social network, with 800 million active users. Rather than creating a better app for Android and Apple tablets and smartphones, Facebook is said to be building its own phone, code-named Buffy, after the vampire slayer of the same name.

According to AllThingsD, citing sources familiar with the project, the company created by Mark Zuckerberg has tapped HTC and will tap potentially Samsung to create a phone that will run on Android that's tweaked heavily to deeply integrate Facebook.

Facebook addicts will likely try out the Buffy phone. Even if just 10 percent of Facebook users buy a Facebok-branded phone in a year, the numbers could propel the social network as top smartphone vendor. But who needs a Facebook phone when you can access Facebook with just any smartphone?

Will its smartphones be one big hit like the social network?

Google

Google Inc. is not new to the smartphone market. It owns Android, which is now the most used platform for smartphones. But Google is paying $12.5 billion for Motorola Mobility. Google has assured Android partners Samsung, HTC, LG, Sony and others that the search giant will continue to provide Android to device-makers for free. While Google will probably promise that Ice Cream Sandwich and future versions will be available equally to everyone, Google will probably try to beef up the Motorola business in order to have a return on its investment.

Motorola has struggled to retain its market share after it leaped on top of the market with its RAZR clamshell phones. Aside from the world's number one search engine, Google has a wide portfolio of online services that include GMail, Google Docs, YouTube, and Chrome. Integrating those services to future Motorola phones and probably using the Google brand will probably help its smartphones have the edge over other Android phones.

But it remains to be seen whether Google will find success as a hardware maker. Its recent launches have been hit-or-miss. While its Google+ social network has gained popularity, its Chromebook laptops have not found success. Google and Samsung have co-developed the Samsung Galaxy Nexus. While the Nexus is the first smartphone running on Android Ice Cream Sandwich, it remains to be seen whether the phone will be as successful as the iPhone 4S (which sold 4 million units in the first three days) and Samsung's flagship Galaxy S 2 (10 million units in the first five months).

After the RAZR, we'll have Google phones for Motorola

Sony

Sony Corp. and Ericsson combined their handset business 10 years ago to draw on the Swedish company's wireless technology and the Japanese consumer electronics giant's gadget expertise. But the joint venture lost its relevance after Apple launched the iPhone in 2007.

After paying 1.05 billion euros to buy out Ericsson from the joint venture, Sony hopes to have a new lease of life for its smartphone business. Now with full control, Sony hopes to differentiate the Sony's Android devices by seamlessly connecting them with other Sony devices, cross-selling and cross-promoting smartphones, tablets, and TVs, and providing access to its entertainment and digital portfolio. While Sony Ericsson's access to Sony's film and TV studio, record labels and gaming network were limited while it was a joint venture, Sony now promises to deliver more content to its smartphones.

Sony has its answer to iTunes, the Sony Entertainment Network, which streams Sony-produced films, games and music to Sony devices. Its PlayStation Network has more than 90 million active users.

"This acquisition makes sense for Sony and Ericsson, and it will make the difference for consumers, who want to connect with content wherever they are, whenever they want. With a vibrant smartphone business and by gaining access to important strategic IP, notably a broad cross-license agreement, our four-screen strategy is in place. We can more rapidly and more widely offer consumers smartphones, laptops, tablets and televisions that seamlessly connect with one another and open up new worlds of online entertainment. This includes Sony's own acclaimed network services, like the PlayStation Network and Sony Entertainment Network," said CEO Sir Howard Stringer.

Stringer also noted that the acquisition will afford Sony operational efficiencies in engineering, network development and marketing, among other areas. "We can help people enjoy all our content - from movies to music and games - through our many devices, in a way no one else can."

The transaction is expected to close in January 2012.

Sony will do an Amazon by taking advantage of its entertainment portfolio to sell its smartphones.
